Stamped Concrete Patios: What They Cost, How They Wear, and When They Beat Pavers

Most homeowners who call us about a back patio are deciding between stamped concrete and pavers. Both are good options. They just fail in different ways, and which one is right depends on what you care about five years from now.

Stamped concrete is one continuous slab. It gets poured, colored, and imprinted with a stone, slate, brick, or wood-plank pattern while it is still workable. Because it is a single surface, there are no joints for weeds to come through and nothing to shift out of level individually.

Pavers are individual units on a compacted base. Their advantage is repairability — you can lift and reset a section. Their weakness is that sand joints grow weeds, edges creep outward over time, and settling shows up unit by unit, which is exactly what you notice when you look across a patio.

On cost, stamped concrete usually lands below a comparable paver install for the same square footage, because you are paying for one pour and one crew rather than base, edge restraint, and unit-by-unit labor. The gap widens as the patio gets bigger.

Where stamped concrete needs attention is sealing. The sealer is what protects the color and keeps water from soaking the surface. Plan on resealing every two to three years in Indiana — it is a half-day job and it is the difference between a patio that still looks new at year eight and one that looks tired at year four.

The base matters just as much as it does on a driveway. A decorative surface poured over uncompacted fill will crack no matter how good the stamp work is. We prep a stamped patio exactly like a structural slab, because that is what it is.

One practical note on color: pick your pattern and color against your actual house, in daylight, not from a brochure. Release color reads differently next to red brick than it does next to gray siding, and it is a one-shot decision once the concrete goes down.
